Medical or Physical Need for Home Mods

Have you (or a loved one) had an illness or injury that impacts the way you function in your home? Do you use a walker or a wheelchair? Are you no longer able to get into the shower? Or even the bathroom?

For the majority of us, our homes were not designed with accessibility in mind.

Liv Equipt was founded to fill this gap -- to help you function in your home and avoid costly institutionalized living. We know you want to stay in your home. And we want to support you in that as long as it is a safe option.

We perform a home safety assessment to identify potential fall hazards and barriers to activities and mobility. We provide recommendations for improved safety, accessibility

and independence.

We often work with clients who have diagnoses such as ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Stroke, Dementia, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, arthritis, or injuries such as Spinal Cord Injury, traumatic brain injury and other traumatic injuries.

We don’t profit from whether you pursue the modifications we suggest! Our role is to serve as your advocate, providing solutions, resources, and ongoing support while collaborating with your contractor, designer, or equipment provider.

Types of Home Modification Needs

Medical Necessity: If you are having difficulty performing daily activities or mobility in your home due to a medical condition or injury, it may be determined that you have a medically necessary need for OT and home modifications. In this case, the OT assessment portion of the home safety assessment may be covered by your health insurance. These visits are required to be in person and within our 15 mile service area.

Aging In Place: Perhaps you are planning for the future and are interested in removing barriers and fall hazards that could pose a detrimental risk to yourself or a loved one? We support aging in place and preparedness. Click here for more information on these services.

Home Mods After Major Hospitalization, Illness or Injury: Often, after major illness or injury, your home may become inaccessible or difficult to safely navigate. We provide in-home and virtual home assessments throughout Alabama. We work closely with case managers and other members of your medical team during your hospital/rehab stay, as well as contractors and architects, to provide the "just right" modifications and have your home ready to meet your accessibility needs for a smooth transition home. Home assessments can also be performed after returning home and may be partially covered by your health insurance as well. However, it is highly recommended to perform home modifications as soon as possible in order to improve safety at home.

Visitability: Do you have a loved one or friend who has difficulty with mobility? We can help modify your home for improved access, so it is welcoming for anyone you may invite in. Afraid that modifications may change the desired look of your home? There are many aesthetically pleasing options for home modifications. You just need the right team! We specialize in finding the right solution to meet your design wants and needs.

Considering Downsizing: Some clients or families may be unsure what the next best step is -- whether to downsize, or stay in their home that is FULL of memories. We are here to help! We can perform a home assessment to determine what modifications would be necessary to safely age in place or help point you in the right direction if moving may be the better option.

After Your Assessment

Following your home assessment, you have the flexibility to decide how to proceed with our recommendations. We can assist you during the entire process, or you can choose to take independent steps. We collaborate with various community partners, and you can select from our recommended contractors, Realtors, designers, architects, and handymen, or opt to use your own.
